Heart Monitoring Course
AWHONN’s Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) Course addresses principles of fetal heart monitoring through lectures and hands-on skill stations including performing Leopold maneuvers, placement of an intrauterine pressure catheter and fetal spiral electrode, interpretation of fetal monitoring tracings using a case-based approach, identification of physiologically based clinical interventions, and communication and risk management principles.

Fetal heart monitoring principles - Topics include maternal and fetal physiology, interpreting fetal and uterine monitor tracings, and evaluating auscultated fetal heart sounds.
Clinical interventions - Topics include identifying physiologically based clinical interventions and describing clinical interventions to optimize fetal oxygenation.
Communication and risk management - Topics include communication and documentation strategies, and evaluation of strategies for enhancing communication.
Perinatal procedures - Topics include performing Leopold maneuvers and placing an intrauterine pressure catheter and fetal spiral electrode.
Case-based approach - Topics include interpreting fetal monitoring tracings using a case-based approach.
Who Should Take this Course?
Clinicians who have completed entry-level/basic fetal monitoring education and use fetal heart monitoring in the intrapartum setting.
Format:
Online prerequisite education is required prior to attending the one-day, instructor-led course. Successful completion of the online knowledge test is required to receive nursing contact hours/CME for the course. This course can be used to support preparation for certification examinations.

The text entitled Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices (6th ed) is the primary reference for course preparation and can be purchased as an e-book or in hard copy (recommended for preparation but not required for course completion).
You will have access to complete the online prerequisite education starting 30 days before the in-person class date. Access ends one day before the in-person course. If the prerequisite is not successfully completed one day before the in-person course, you will be denied access to complete the prerequisite and you will not be allowed entry to the in-person course.

Enter the Course ID and Student Materials ID (found on the inside cover of student materials).
Complete the online registration form. The name on the certificate will appear exactly as entered here.

Accept the AWHONN Adherence to Online Prerequisite Agreement.
Review all prerequisite modules. After completing the modules, pass the post-test with a score of 80% or higher (two attempts).
